On Friday 28 March, in Rome, in Largo dei Lombardi, in the central Via del Corso, the first of the “Fridays for Europe” “sit-ins” will take place. Starting at 4 pm, dozens of young Europeans will gather to reiterate the fundamental concept that there is no “B” Europe, expendable on the altar of the balance between superpowers. Neither Moscow nor Washington decide the fate of Europeans, and Europe is now at a historic crossroads. The choice, once again, is between taking the road to independence and sovereignty or remaining “outside of history” at the mercy of the arrogance of the powerful of the day.
The slogan and the style recall the urgency of the moment. Recovered from the unrealistic “green” movements, we have reoriented it towards what today appears to us as the true generational threat for every European. More than climate change, in fact, it is the international political climate that raises our concerns.
The perfect storm unleashed live worldwide by Trump & Vance, with the media pillory imposed on Volodymyr Zelens’kyj, and the predatory intentions with the Kremlin, have not only humiliated the president of Ukraine, they have mocked and insulted an entire nation and a people who for more than three years have been facing, almost alone, the Russian invasion of Europe. This appears to us today as an intolerable threat to the natural process of European integration and to the path towards full and mature self-determination of an entity, to date unprecedented, that can interpret the requests and strategic needs of a power of over seven hundred million people.
This Friday, March 28, will be the first of the “Fridays” dedicated to mobilizing for an idea of a new, strong and independent Europe, capable of freeing itself from the yoke imposed by the defeat in the Second World War and by the system of imperialism, both Russian and American. In neither of these two interpretations of domination, in fact, do we recognize a power that has as its objective a true European resurgence which today is instead imperative and urgent.
Far from being a complete entity, Europe can no longer be declined only as a super bureaucracy or as a financial machine, the “herbivorous power” mocked in international geopolitical schools today has the opportunity, given the drama of the moment, to evolve into a being, at least omnivorous, capable of playing a role as a privileged partner in the continental and Mediterranean area through the tools of cooperation and economic exchange but also of defending its interests, its citizens, its principles and its borders through a capable use of military deterrence.
The event is open to all those who feel the urgent need to make their voices heard and commit themselves in favor of a cohesive and sovereign Europe that extends its power from the Atlantic coasts to the Caucasus, that knows how to find, within itself, the strength to support without hesitation both the Ukrainian patriots threatened by war and the European workers threatened by duties and competition. A Europe of power, made of culture, tradition, economy, innovation and law, cohesive, protected and strong, “a homeland”, for Europeans, “as has never been seen”.
